There’s no place like home…
On June 23rd and 24th The Flaming Lips played in Atlantic City – including on the latter night their new arrangement of The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety with highlights from The Wizard of Oz. The next day they were scheduled to travel seven hours northwest to play in Rochester, New York. That show however – a late addition to The Flaming Lips Peace and Punk Rock Summer Tour – was postponed. Its promoters needed more time, so Wayne flew to his home state Oklahoma – where he is shooting a role in a new movie with Melanie Griffith. Almost immediately upon arriving back, Wayne left again, driving to Lawrence, Kansas – home to Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock.
In 2009 Kliph discussed Lawrence with the local music site pitch.com/wayward: “I just really love it here. A lot of my friends are here. I live close to downtown, so I like that I can walk downtown and go to the Replay. Love Garden is a big thing that keeps me here [in Lawrence] because I’m a total music nerd, so having a great record store is really important to me…”
Kliph, a big fan of Love Garden, often wears a red hoodie from the store (i.e. when he met Clash legend Mick Jones, pictured above left, and when The Flaming Lips promoted Dark Side of the Moon on Jimmy Fallon playing “Breathe” with Stardeath and White Dwarfs April 2010). With this in mind, it’s only fitting that Wayne personally delivered to Love Garden the first of The Flaming Lips’ monthly 2011 releases to not be exclusively offered at Oklahoma’s Guestroom before other stores.
As of now Love Garden is the only store in the world to have sold the latest Flaming Lips release – a Gummy Song Fetus with three new songs. Not only did they sell-out on Saturday, but some potential customers didn’t even get a chance to buy due to limited supply.

The Gummy Song Fetuses are smaller than the $150 Gummy Song Skulls released in April, and thus more reasonably priced at $30. They are bound to be popular once they become more widely available.

And he wasn’t coming alone. Coyne, who had just flown in from the east coast, was driving up to Lawrence from Oklahoma with a little more than a dozen gummy fetuses… It didn’t take long for word to spread in Lawrence, and within five hours, Coyne and Corcoran were waltzing through the front door with boxes of gummy fetuses tucked under their arms. There were quite a bit more fans than there were fetuses, so record store employees drew names out of a hat”

iheartlocalmusic” While one line was forming to purchase the gummy fetuses, another (much longer) line was forming in front of Coyne. He met with each and every single fan in the record store, discussed music and festivals (including the upcoming Kanrocksas)…The atmosphere at Love Garden on Saturday night was laid back, fun and even at times a little silly. At one point, a fan chowed down on the gummy fetus right in front of him while he happily tweeted a photo of the process. He never pushed a conversation with anyone to end, he let it run its comfortable course. Sure, that may have meant the line moved slower, but everyone got to share a moment with him. That’s what summers in Lawrence, Kansas, are for. A series of one memorable moment after the other. I’m sure years from now every person at the record store on Saturday night will remember “that time Wayne Coyne showed up at Love Garden and handed out edible fetuses.”
